Dark Ages America

I just started reading an excellent, but depressing book -- Morris Berman's "Dark Ages America: The Final Phase of Empire." Berman is able to articulate a lot of the concerns and worries I have had about the declining ethical state of the U.S. and the destruction we are causing and instigating around the world. Because this country is incapable of self-criticism or self-reflection, we are doomed to be marginalized in the world in the next few decades, our hegemony replaced by China, the European Union, or some other alliance of emerging powers. Berman also shows how undemocratic a country we have become, reverting to a type of "procedural republic," and suggests, I think convincingly, that we may be just one terrorist attack away from becoming a police state. Sounds like a fascinating book. The republican tentacles are not only wreaking havoc around the earth but also causing a moral decay among its citizens; citizens that truly care for what this country and its basic tenet, which is “we the people” and not “I, the emperor.”
